In honesty the label “commemorative mural” proves somewhat misleading; We Ain’t Got Shit is a meditation on the search for and construction of transgender role models. The cloud of copied pages are randomly selected excerpts from Rivera’s essay, “Queens in Exile, the Forgotten Ones” (Gender/queer, Nestle et al.: 2002) and suggest the limited and potentially out-of-context information the artists used to create their idea of who she was.
